Eat Local

Learning to eat for good nourishment takes time and practice. It's worth it! But allow yourself lots of grace and time.

This may be the first time ever you have thought about the food you eat as fuel for yourself and your potential baby. Calorie counting or restricting is not a part of this plan. However, food is fun and delicious! This is a great time to start to eat for enjoyment and nourishment and not restriction.

Finding the most nourishing food may take a little bit more time, effort and resources. But, the food from your own community has more available nutrients because it is fresher and has less processing. Eating more in season produce can be a little more challenging but as you get used to it, it will become more natural.

Finding some local farms to get produce, eggs, dairy, meat & poultry can be a great first step. Check out these websites to find some local procurers:

In some communities, there are local farmers markets held weekly. These markets are a great way to talk directly with the farmer and ask how they prepare the produce. Meat or poultry. They are a wealth of information! Community Supported Agriculture or CSA’s are a program that you can buy into at the beginning of the season and get a box of in season produce throughout the year. By getting weekly produce, you will increase your fruits and veggies. There are also CSA’s for meat, poultry, dairy and eggs. Some will ship right to your door and some you may have to pick up weekly.

If you don’t have the time or resources to buy many foods locally, by switching to more whole foods and less from a box or bag, you will still dramatically increase the amount of nutrients you are consuming. Just do what you can do to improve your health, one step at a time.
